SOUL Classes for January through March 2012 will be covering the book of Galatians, as explained below:
Todd Rivetti will be teaching the class on Galatians. Paul’s letter to the Galatians is one of the earliest documents that we possess from the beginning of the church’s existence. It gives us a very interesting glimpse into what was happening in the lives of these early followers of Jesus. Each week we are going to engage in a communal reading of portions of Paul’s letters and reflect on their message to the original hearers/recipients.
After our weekly reading, we will compare and contrast the messages that we read each Sunday with other letters from Paul’s writings as well as other New Testament books and letters that deal with similar topics. In other words, we will try to roam both widely and deeply into the bible to make helpful connections that can enable us to better understand Paul’s messages.
After reflecting on these messages, we will try to think about how they should speak to us today. We will not be in a hurry – but will try to slowly reflect upon God’s word and let it speak to us wherever we might be (emotionally, mentally, or physically) on that particular day. One of the primary goals in this approach to reading the bible together is to be welcoming to everyone, regardless of their past experience with the bible.
