Soul Classes

SOUL is CCC’s adult continuing education ministry.  The Apostle Paul wrote “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17) Paul wrote this to his young apprentice Timothy so that he (and we) would know how to walk with God in the company of the faithful and in the midst of the world. The Bible helps us with all three: to grow in our personal relationship with God; to fulfill our purpose as a vital member of the body of Christ—the Church; and to bring the good news of Jesus Christ to a suffering world.

SOUL is one means by which people at CCC can dive deeper into God’s Word. SOUL is a slate of classes taught or facilitated by CCC members, held every Sunday morning in the hour before the Worship service. SOUL classes are of three types—Knowledge, Skill, and Character. Knowledge-oriented classes focus on getting to understand the Bible itself. They have as their subject a book of the Bible, or some aspect of theology derived from relevant text throughout the pages of Scripture. Examples of past or future knowledge-oriented classes include: the Gospel of Matthew, Reading Isaiah, Ephesians, Read The Bible [in Chronological Order], the Theology of the Cross, Church History, and Apologetics. Skill-oriented classes are aimed at training us to better do the work of the ministry. Examples include: Evangelism, Raising Great Kids, and CROWN Ministries’ Christian Financial Concepts. Character-oriented classes help us to grow in Christlikeness and exhibit the fruits of the Spirit. Examples include: Tongue in Check, Spiritual Disciplines, Prayer and Walking in Grace.

Some SOUL classes employ books or videos of great Christian teachers beyond our local fellowship, such as RC Sproul. Some, especially in the Summer quarter, are a bit…uh…”innovative”, like ‘Lessons from the Lord of the Rings’. All are deeply rooted in Scripture, even if they use some other work as study guide or as conversation starter. In all SOUL classes, we strive for the best mix of reading from the Scriptures, lecture, and discussion—with a bit of laughter rising naturally.

We encourage everyone, first time visitors and long-time members, just-born Christians and seasoned saints, to join in the adventure. The fun part of learning is learning together, and learning from one another as God works in each of us. The Apostle John said “these things I have written to you that your joy may be full.” (I John 1:4) Come join us, and let’s enjoy His Word together!

For the winter quarter 2012-2013, Todd Rivetti will be teaching a class on Galatians.
